Business News

Our Platinum business members over at Devision IT company made headlines this month when they gave their services to a long-running campaign to bring CCTV cameras into Melksham’s town centre. When plans hit an unexpected bump, Necla Evans, Operations Director of Devision, and her wonderful team made themselves available to save the day. Melksham's new CCTV camera is installed.

With the first stage of the CCTV system due to be installed, the group were forced to ask for help following a shortfall when a high-specification computer was required to enable the group full control of the cameras. There was then an appeal placed in the last edition of Melksham News, and Devision stepped forward within hours to offer their specialist services and assistance.

This is a perfect example of Corporate Social Responsibility, or CSR, because Devision not only helped the company in question, but their work will have a direct and immediate positive effect on the Melksham community and its wider area. This generosity demonstrates to all, the power we as business owners have when we all pull together.

Re-shaping the future of Corporate Social Responsiblity (CSR)

Traditional corporate social responsibility (CSR) is failing to deliver for organisations and society according to McKinsey’s March 2013 article, Beyond Corporate Social Responsibility: Integrated external engagement, and companies as well as the causes they support in the name of CSR need to take note!

Here at Business against Poverty (BaP), we address this issue by encouraging our members to shift from common past practices of high-profile, quick-win initiatives that feature in the glossy corporate annual review to authentic integrated engagement!
CSR started out as the latest buzzword a few years ago, yet is proving more complex to implement than initially envisaged. One concern cited by company shareholders is that some CSR and philanthropic activities detract from the core focus of the business. It is often handled separately to main systems and processes, resulting in little staff “buy-in” and generating “they’re just doing it for the PR” cynicism!

The solution is achieved by companies creating a shared vision and actively integrating CSR into every area of their business, from procurement to recruitment, strategy, sales and more.

Ambassadors Spot

Hello and welcome to the Ambassador’s spot!

Same as General CaptionIt’s been a month of meetings for me; well, that’s what it’s felt like; not my favourite use of time however there were a few meetings that provided the perfect opportunity to introduce Business against Poverty. One of the things I’ve really enjoyed sharing in my conversations are the awareness trips giving members & volunteers real time experience of what poverty looks like up close and personal as well as seeing how their contributions make a difference. I think we often forget just how lucky we are and just how trivial some of the things we worry about are so I for one need to get on one of the trips soon.

I also spent some time with Kate Shakespeare, manager at Somer Valley Enterprise Park and she was incredibly supportive of spreading the word to her business tenants. With my back and forth trips to London I ensured I had my BaP packs at the ready and I managed to bring a new member on board. Michelle Walkes is the MD of Manor Grove Spa, Northants. She is an amazingly committed business woman with a stunning day spa that is a must for anyone in need of some TLC (and I imagine that’s most of us) or, if you’re anything like me, no reason required beyond believing you’ve worked hard for it!
I love my ambassador role, it is truly an honour and I want to bring in new members each and every month. And if there are any members out there who believe in the power of collaboration, then join me in the role and let’s sky rocket this membership…

Have a great and prosperous month!
Yvonne

Yvonne’s monthly update

Hello,Same as General Caption

I don’t mind saying I am loving the role albeit initially phased with the challenges of a very busy professional life juggled with the role of being a mum. Continue reading
