Earlier this year, we announced we would be ring-fencing £10,000 to support a new UK project based in the BA postcode region. We asked for individuals or groups to submit their ideas for a community initiative and are now delighted to confirm that a project has been selected – Bridging the Gap – which will be run by founders and volunteer project leaders, Fay Yandell and Claire Parfitt.
With a strapline of “Reaching local people in crisis”, Bridging the Gap’s objectives are to help those in dire poverty by receiving donations of quality household, clothing and personal hygiene items, and distributing them to people in need who are referred by established social welfare and public sector partners, including foodbanks and Social Security departments. They are keen to take items such as cooking utensils and saucepans, clothing for adults and children, toys and new hygiene items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo and underwear.
The project will benefit not only from financial support, but also the expertise, experience and guidance of Pap’s own team headed up by chief executive officer, Val Huxley, who commented “There has been a significant increase in UK poverty levels over the past few years – something we recognise and are keen to help address. For some time we have been considering a UK project, and Bridging the Gap is a perfect fit with our existing initiatives. I’m very excited about working with Fay and Claire to help those in our local vicinity who are struggling to keep going.”
Project leader, Claire, added: “It’s heartbreaking when families have barely enough to survive – and even if they receive a foodbank parcel, they may not have the utensils with which to prepare the food. We aim to be the ‘in-between’ support, bridging the gap and helping them take the next step to get back on their feet. Working with Val and the team will make a huge difference to quantity and scope of what we can achieve. We are also keen to work with PaP’s business community, Business against Poverty (BaP) as we develop the project, and will be joining them at their September 11th networking event.”
An open coffee morning will be held on 23 September from 9.30am to 11.30am at our head office in Hilperton, Trowbridge for Bridging the Gap’s referral partners, supporters and those interested in finding out more.
